Joshua Oppenheimer's post-apocalyptic musical The End

Hello Reader,

In the second of three TIFF 2024 episodes featuring Angelo Muredda, we dive into Joshua Oppenheimer's post-apocalyptic musical The End. It marks the fiction debut for the director behind The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence.

And it takes some big, big directorial swings....to mixed results.

The film is due for a limited US/Canada release in early December, so you'll be able to see it soon!

Dr. Angelo Muredda joins me to discuss this buzzed-about film, why we found it interesting, and why it doesn't totally work.

We also discuss:

  • Whether the film works as a musical (and what kind of musical) and why
  • How the film works (or doesn't) as a post-apocalyptic vision
  • The film's exploration of privilege and complicity
  • and more!

And we've kept it pretty much spoiler-free!

Hello Reader, Fresh off his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy stars in and produces Small Things Like These, a subtle, thoughtful Irish independent film that's one of the year's best. Despite Murphy's deep involvement and tremendous lead performance, the film is more than a star vehicle: it's a character actor's film that's peopled with character actors. It's a film that's as much about the world around Cillian Murphy's character as it is about him. Cillian Murphy stars as Bill...
