Hello Reader, Hope you're having a fabulous weekend! I wanted to put a new film on your radar for fans of feminist horror films. Lena Wilson's glowing review of The Devil's Bath persuaded me to watch the film this weekend, and I'm delighted that this is a rare slow-burn psychological horror film -- though with more stomach-churning images than I could personally tolerate without some breaks! Lena and I were both big admirers of the filmmakers' Goodnight Mommy, and this is another film in which, as Lena puts it, the filmmakers "put kids and maternal figures in peril." The biggest horror, of course, is patriarchy! The Devil’s Bath is a breathtaking masterwork that will ruin your night and possibly your lifePublished on July 6, 2024 Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s harrowing new drama makes their previous chillers, Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge, look like episodes of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. It's now streaming on Shudder. If you end up watching, let me know. Lena would love to know her review persuaded you, and I'd love to know that this was helpful. And if you don't, and the review helped you decide against it, let me know, too! Happy watching! Alex

Admittedly, I was a little skeptical. Much as I liked Lee's film and Ahn's feature debut Spa Night, I wondered...do we really need to revive this rather dated story 30 years later? But I went to see it because, if nothing else, I will watch anything with Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon, Certain Women, and Lockdown...
Hello Reader, There's a persistent myth that the best way to watch movies that you'll enjoy is to watch what's already in your well-established wheelhouse. The last thing you want to do is take a risk on an unknown quantity that you might not like. I 100% understand this. You only have so much free time, and you want the movies you watch to count. But here's the truth: One of the best highs you can get from cinema is when you discover a film you wouldn't have otherwise watched and didn't...
