Hello Reader,
This week, we're excited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Oslo, August 31st, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier. We named Oslo, August 31st the best film of the 2010s and the lead performance from actor Anders Danielsen Lie as one of the best performances of the 2010s.
To celebrate, we're publishing a new piece every day this week on the film! These are all excerpts from our forthcoming book! Longer, and even more in-depth versions of the interviews will be in the book.....
We're also extremely excited to announce that our next ebook, due out in early 2022, will focus on Joachim Trier's films and filmmaking process.
The book will especially focus on Trier's latest film, The Worst Person in the World, featuring interviews with the whole team behind it, as well as essays. But we'll be going deep on his entire filmography both through interviews and essays. This will be the book to discover Trier's work.
Sign up for regular updates on Trier's work and the book, including early excerpts
We kicked off the week with Alex's essay on Oslo, August 31st and Trier's subsequente film, Louder Than Bombs, which share themes of suicide, depression, and loneliness. The essay delves into Oslo, August 31st‘s clear cut, fatalistic story of exile, and how that sense of estrangement in Louder than Bombs is much more complex and optimistic.
On Tuesday, we published an interview with the film's production designer, Jørgen Stangebye Larsen, who talked to Orla about crafting a geographically realistic portrait of the city.
Last year, we recorded a podcast on Oslo, August 31st and Another Round — two Nordic films that deal with male mental health — which was previously only available to members. We've now republished it for all to listen to, with a new introduction that also discusses the Joachim Trier book project.
Anders Danielsen Lie reflects back on his work on the film and how it has influenced his approach to acting since.
