[Podcast] The Josh O'Connor Playlist

Hello Reader.

Josh O'Connor is one of the best actors of his generation.

On this week's podcast on Challengers, we discussed how he and director Luca Guadagnino are the MVPs of the film. His performance elevates everyone else's.

If you'd like to explore his work further, listen to our playlist of Josh O'Connor-related podcasts.

From dramatic roles to comedic ones, period pieces to contemporary works, famous fictional characters to famous historical figures, Josh has already done it all.

And we've covered many of them on the podcast.

Listen to all the (free) podcasts on Josh O'Connor on Spotify at the playlist below. Or scroll down for details and links to listen on your preferred podcatcher. We've also got premium episodes on his work in Mothering Sunday (2021) and The Riot Club (2014), which you can listen to by becoming a member.

1. God's Own Country

Begin with where we began with Josh O'Connor with this episode on Francis Lee's queer romances God's Own Country and Ammonite.

We first noticed Josh O'Connor in God's Own Country as the emotionally repressed, inarticulate farmhand Johnny. We loved the film so much we wrote a whole book about it.

Also, I can't say enough about how the film depicts touch and tenderness between two men, including (but not limited to) the very hot and sweet sex scenes.

2. Emma.

If you thought O'Connor was exclusively a dramatic actor, see him in Emma. as a hilarious Mr. Elton -- the very best part of this adaptation of Jane Austen's novel.

You know that scene in Challengers where he stands up from the ground so fast as soon as Zendaya invites him to come near? It's in the trailer. That perfect comic timing is on display in Emma., too.

On the podcast, we discuss two adaptations of Emma: the 2020 one with Josh O'Connor and the Gwyneth Paltrow one, in which Alan Cumming plays the role of Mr. Elton.

3. The Crown

Before Challengers, Josh's most famous role was as Prince Charles in season 3 and 4 of The Crown. His standalone episode in season 3 was the best thing about that entire season (You can absolutely watch it without watching any of the rest of the series!), and he continued to do incredible work in season 4.

Yes, he has the Prince Charles ears. But he also shows us Charles's boyish hurt and ability to reach for absolute cruelty.

On this episode of the podcast, we discuss season 4 of The Crown, and of course, how good Josh is in it.

Hello Reader, Last weekend, I went to see Andrew Ahn's new film The Wedding Banquet (2025) which updates and reimagines Ang Lee's 1993 queer classic for a 2025 audience. Admittedly, I was a little skeptical. Much as I liked Lee's film and Ahn's feature debut Spa Night, I wondered...do we really need to revive this rather dated story 30 years later? But I went to see it because, if nothing else, I will watch anything with Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon, Certain Women, and Lockdown...

Hello Reader, There's a persistent myth that the best way to watch movies that you'll enjoy is to watch what's already in your well-established wheelhouse. The last thing you want to do is take a risk on an unknown quantity that you might not like. I 100% understand this. You only have so much free time, and you want the movies you watch to count. But here's the truth: One of the best highs you can get from cinema is when you discover a film you wouldn't have otherwise watched and didn't...
