Hello Reader, The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival came to a close on Sunday, but my Seventh Row coverage is still going strong! There are two new podcast episodes since I last wrote, and will be a couple more through the next few weeks, probably heading into October. TIFF 2024 Ep. 6: Ralph Fiennes x 2: The Return and ConclaveAs a Ralph Fiennes superfan, I talked about the two TIFF 2024 films where he plays the lead: pope election film Conclave and the adaptation of the end of The Odyssey, The Return. Both films will be out later this year, so I've kept these episodes spoiler-free. Listen to the Ralph Fiennes episode TIFF 2024 Ep. 5: Bicultural daughters and their absent fathers: My Father’s Daughter, Winter in Sokcho, and A Missing PartIn this episode, I talk about three sales titles (i.e., they've not yet got a distributor in the UK/Canada/US) that I really, really liked, which are all about bicultural daughters and their absent fathers. Two of these are debut features, and one is a third feature. Despite being set in Norway, Japan, and Korea, and made by filmmakers from Sapmi, France, and Germany, these films all deal with similar issues of identity and what it means to have an absent father (including for the father in A Missing Part) Keep an eye out for these at your local festival. And even if you're not sure if you'll be able to see them, I think this episode is still for you as I talk about the patterns in the films and what the directors had to say about the films and how they approach identity.
